Symmetry

Risk Reporting: Asian Support Developer

Hong Kong Full-time

Description

Symmetry Investments is a global investment company with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Jersey and Cayman Islands. We have been in business since 2014 after successfully spinning off from a major New York-based hedge fund.

At Symmetry Investments, we seek to engage in intelligent risk-taking to create value for our clients, partners and employees. We derive our edge from our capacity to generate Win-Wins – in the broadest sense. Win-Win is our fundamental ethical and strategic principle. By generating Win-Wins, we can create unique solutions that reconcile perspectives that are usually seen as incompatible or opposites, and encompass the best that each side has to offer:
We integrate fixed-income arbitrage with global macro strategies in a novel way.
We invent and develop technology that focuses on the potential of human-machine integration.
We build systems where machines do what they do best, supporting people to do what people do best.
We are creating a collaborative meritocracy: a culture where individual contribution serves both personal and collective goals - and is rewarded accordingly.
We value both ownership thinking AND cooperative team spirit, self-realization AND community.

Role

As the firm grows there is a need to add a new role in the Asia time zone, supporting and developing the firm's global internal reporting processes. Those processes are crucial for the firm's internal decision making of a number of departments, including Risk and Finance, so diligence, attention to detail and timeliness is key.

The role will benefit from help and guidance from the rest of the team (HK / UK based). The individual will learn how to fix problems on the fly after a short time at the firm. Over time we expect the individual to make urgent decisions independently and with good judgement.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of enthusiasm towards immediate issue resolution, but demonstrating calmness while doing so. They will have an ability to ensure that the totality of the groups ecosystem is benefited when making local changes. In time, this individual will be expected to operate more autonomously in terms of decisions taken, project design and completion. The role will also grow towards participation on development on both individual and collaborative projects which requires clear thought around design, critical thinking / problem solving and understanding of Symmetry's setup.

There are numerous other projects that we'd expect the individual to be able to pick up (in time), as the team is global in nature and not siloed.

Responsibilities

Finance Background:
It is expected that the candidate has an understanding of the different asset classes as well as associated risks. Familiarity with common financial terms and conventions is expected. Knowledge should have been gained from a hands-on role. As the firm can trade all asset classes, any experience will be considered however we particularly value fixed income and equities experience.
Programming Skills:
We use an in-house programming language which is relatively easy to pick up however prior experience with large code bases is required, ideally ones that have grown in organic ways. Navigating and reading this code is key while troubleshooting issues, so familiarity with this is expected. Experience with group-based code development and versioning tools, such as GitLab, would be preferable.
Communication Skills:
The candidate will need to be able to translate complex ideas and observations fast and in a succinct way to other technical team members primarily in written. It is expected that the candidate will need to get their hands dirty however they are not expected to do all the work themselves. Symmetry is very much about collaboration. That means that everybody needs to have a flexible mindset. It is understood that an individual might not know every single detail, so it is expected that they ask others to arrive at the best solution.
